Read the following passage carefully.
Redwood,
also known as Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), grows in a very narrow
strip along the coast of California from the extreme southwestern corner of
Oregon to 150 miles south of San Francisco. Redwood is a rapidly growing tree,
and some individual trees have been measured at more than 360 feet in height,
making it the tallest measured tree species on the earth. In favourable
situations, trees 20 years old may average fifty feet in height and eight
inches in diameter. The dimensions of average mature trees vary from 200 to 240
feet in height. Redwood leaves are green, flat, and sharp-pointed. The brown
cones are egg-shaped and only half an inch in diameter. The soft, reddish-brown
bark, six to twelve inches thick, is one of the Coast Redwood's most
distinguishing characteristic and, together with the wood, lends the name to
the species. The barks of older trees have a grayish tinge and are deeply
furrowed, giving the trees a fluted appearance.
Although
the thick bark of older trees is relatively fire resistant, repeated fires can
cause considerable damage. At times, when a fire is strong enough to burn all
layers and kill the tree, its roots, buried in the cool, moist soil, often live
on and produce new sprouts. Fire either seriously injures the young growth or
kills it outright. Also, Redwood trees are often more likely to be affected by
wind than fire, and can be toppled by fierce winter storms. However, Redwood is
exceptionally free from fungus diseases, and there are no insects which
materially harm it. Human demand for wood is responsible for most of the
destruction of Coast Redwood forests.

Read the following passage carefully.
In
ancient Rome, there
lived a brave
and famous soldier,
named
Horatius.
Once Lars Porsena had sent a large army to attack and conquer Rome.
The
Romans loved their freedom. They did not want to become slaves. They knew that
the only way the enemy could enter Rome was by crossing the River Tiber.
There
was a wooden bridge across the river. So the Roman generals and the soldiers
held a meeting to discuss what to do. “We have to cut down the bridge,” said
one of the generals. “We will lose the bridge, but atleast Rome will be saved.”
A
group of soldiers left at once to cut down the bridge. The bridge was strong
and cutting it down would not be easy. The soldiers worked hard. They saw the
Lars Porsena’s army coming towards them. “Hurry up,” shouted the general. Lars
Porsena’s army was already on the other side of the bridge.
The
general asked some soldiers to hold back the enemy on the other side. But no
one spoke. Then a soldier stepped forward. It was Horatius. “I will drive back
Lars Porsena. Rome is more precious
to me” said Horatius. “All I need are two men along to stop the enemy.”
Horatius inspired the others. Two brave soldiers of the Roman army ran to his
side.
The
three men took their weapons and ran to the other end of the bridge. Lars
Porsena and his army laughed at them as they were just three. Horatius and his
companions fought bravely. But soon they would be out-numbered. The bridge
shook, it would fall at any moment. Horatius sent his two friends back. He was
alone now. The enemy came charging at him.
The
bridge had become weak by then. It could not take the weight of the enemy army.
It collapsed into the river.
Horatius jumped into the water and began to swim. The Roman soldiers pulled him
out.
The enemy was disappointed. Rome was safe, thanks to Horatius.
2
a.
What did the Romans generals and soldiers decide to do during
the meeting?
b.
What
happened to Horatius when the bridge collapsed?
c.
Who
stepped forward to hold Lars Porsena’s army back? Why?
